SEOUL, Oct. 14 ( Yonhap ) - Several countries envy the fiscal health of South Korea said Monday Gerhard Steger , Chairman of the Working Party Budget High Ranking Officials of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD ) , applauding the South Korean government to keep its fiscal position in good shape while obtaining economic growth.
" Several countries envy much the debt ratio to GDP ( South Korea ) , about 36 percent , is actually very healthy tax composition ," Steger said in an interview with Yonhap News Agency .
Steger visited Seoul to attend a two-day international forum on tax matters , which opened Monday. The forum was jointly organized by the South Korean government and the OECD.
He said that economic development is important for maintaining fiscal health , but noted that it is also very important to economic growth as it builds confidence in a country , which is critical to maintain fiscal health in good shape.
He added that South Korea " was one of the few countries in the OECD that registered a positive growth rate since 2009 " when the financial crisis hit the world economy. He added that South Korea is a country " exemplary" fiscal management
