South Korea, which is one of the most connected countries in the world, has announced a one thousand million euros project for the establishment of a fifth generation (5G) network that will allow download a film in a second.
The science ministry has fixed a six years term. “We have helped in the development of the country with the 2G in the 90¨s, with the 3G in the 2000 decade and 4G around 2010. Now is the time for de 5G development” said the ministry in a release. “Many European countries, China and United States have intensified their efforts to develop 5G technology, and we think that would be a big competence in the sector in a couple of years” added.
The fifth generation internet connections´ are one thousand times better than the 4G services and allow, for example, download a high definition film in a second. With 5G high speed passengers´ train will also have internet access.
According to the government plans, a demonstration will begin in 2017 before being commercialized in 2020.
Korean manufacturers represent the 30% share of the global mobile devices thanks, mainly to Samsung, world leader in this sector, although it has the increasingly competence of china brands, such as Huawei ZTE or Lenovo.
In November Huawei announced a commercial launch of the 5G for 2020. In Europe, the Metis project encloses 84 telecommunications enterprises working in the development of 5G. The project has 27 million budget, which part of it comes from the European Commission that has set a date for it’s implantation.
In May 2013, Samsung probed the 5G with success, with data transmission at a rate of one gigabit per second.
