South Korea has revealed that 93% of high school students get their degree on time. There isn’t school dropout. In less than 40 years, South Korea has become a global economic power of the world, where the entire burden relapses in his human capital.
This country outstands for having a high proportion of students with academic excellence at PRISA’s report; in fact, in 2014, was the country with the best results. Fifteen year old students have achieved an average of 554 points, 60 above the OCDE average, two points of advantage over Spain.
The importance of the education is a top priority for all families whom can pay over 8.000 dollars for each child for extracurricular classes (about the third part of the average salary). It is worth noting that the education is free and compulsory from 7 to 15 years old, and the teaching staff are very respected (only 5% of the applicants with better degrees, can access to training colleges). On the other hand, the system is based on memorization, excluding the conceptual understanding and creativity. The main objective is that the students acquire knowledge. Therefore, in spite of being the best at the admission tests of international universities like Harvard and Yale, over a 44% of these students fail for not knowing how improvise or to work in team.
High school students devote an average of 12 hours of everyday study. They stay at school around six and seven hours, plus the academy hours, there are even some schools that provide a quick dinner at 5pm, so they can quickly reach at the academies. After being two or three hours in these educational support centres, they continue studying at theirs homes. Asunaro´s Association for Human Rights interviewed more than 6.200 students; from whom the majority of them assured feeling stressed for being competitive and keeping up to date educational work. In addition, they only sleep an average of six hours per day, when normally it is recommended to sleep around seven and eight. Although the South Korean’s Educational system has shown to be very effective and can, appear in the rankings, there are still many drawbacks. It has the he highest suicide mortality rate among the countries from the OCDE. Above all among young people from 10 years on, in which the main reason is the pressure to achieve the best results especially in the entrance examination marks, above all at the University Admissions Test, where they are presented more than 670.000 students.
If you fail to get a college degree that means that you can’t get a good job, neither you can’t belong to the elite. However, the suicide is a taboo subjet. Humble are not capable to get an elite education.
