SEOUL, March (EFE) .- South Korea in February achieved a trade surplus worth about 6,800 million euros (7,400 million dollars), representing 1.3 percent less compared to the same month of 2015 , according to data released today by the South Korean government.
February was the forty-ninth consecutive month of positive for the fourth largest economy in Asia trade balance.
However, in the second month of the year South Korean exports, which account for around 50 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) Asian country, they shrank for the fourteenth consecutive month.
The fall in the value of exports was 12.2 percent year on year to 33,440 million euros (36,400 million dollars), according to figures released by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy.
The fall was lower than that recorded in January, when the decline was 18.8 percent year on year, the worst figure since August 2009.
Exports from Asia's fourth largest economy have suffered since the start of last year amid falling foreign demand and cheaper oil prices, which affects major South Korean products such as petrochemicals and petroleum products.
In turn, imports from China decreased in February by 14.6 percent year on year to 26,650 million euros (29,000 million dollars).
