South Korea will be the first country to offer 5G services due to a experimental phase taking take place in Pyeongchang, during the Winter Olimpic Games, in 2018.
This will be held even before 5G standard is approved by the international organizations, which implies a risky effort in pursuit of innovation. A infrastructure will be deployed in PyeongChang, Jeongseon, Gangneung and Seoul. It will provided a 8 bands CA (Carrier Aggregation), which combines 8 100 MHZ carriers ( 800 MHz in total), to provide 10 Gbps devices speed. The three mobile operators will provide features such as videostreaming360º, video from athlete´s vision, 3D maps of the sports facilities, virtual and augmented reality services or broadcasting of drone races.
Regarding Internet of Things ( IoT), SK Telecom has become the first company to install a LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) network at national level, finishing that deployment in the first half of 2016. Beside the existing network (LTE- M), it offers two different technologies that allow the business to provide distinct services.
They establish three categories, according to data volume, required connectivity in real time, energy consumption and mobility. In a first category, with high data volume, necessity of connexion in real time and high mobility is, for example, the connected car or without driver. In a second group, it does not require high data volume, but it does mobility; this group includes track vehicles or electronic ankle brace for house arrests. In a third place, there are services that require low data volume, low mobility and low electric consumption; for instance: measurements of gas, electricity or water, electric lighting or control services monitoring.
