On the occasion of the JJ. OO Winter Festival of PyeongChang 2018, Gangwon Province, to which the city of PyeongChang belongs, presents the "Gangwon International Biennial 2018" from February 3 to March 18, 2018 at the Green City Center in Gangneung, and coinciding with the period of the world sport event.
This Biennial is the fruit of work and preparation during the last 6 years to support the JJ. OO Winter Festival of PyeongChang 2018, "the JJ. OO cultural ". Under the theme <The Dictionary of Evil>, dares to reveal the harmony, coexistence and recovery of human values. It seems that the theme does not correspond to the Olympic spirit, but in the words of Kyung-han Hong, artistic director, this Biennial is based on the responsibilities of artists who asked about the essence and role of art within society and the basic mission of the Biennial. In this sense the theme <The Dictionary of Evil> is a substantive concept that can reflect the tragic experiences that have occurred in contemporary history, which should not be repeated. "He also adds that in the end, the goal of this event is questioning the direction by which we should move, which is the ideal of the JJ. OO., Reviewing the everyday or exceptional evil of society.
This event gathers more than 60 artistic groups from more than 20 countries with about 110 works, offering an opportunity to observe the trend of contemporary art as they have all kinds of works such as the art of new media, sculpture, installation, painting and performance
Many of the participating artists are and have been relevant in international events such as the Venice Biennial and Kassel Documenta. Among others, we can mention Thomas Hirschhorn from Switzerland, Wael Shawky from Egypt, Walid Raad from Lebanon, Rafael Gómez Barros from Colombia.
Also participating are the most emerging Korean artists: Heung-Soon Im, winner of the Silver Lion for the best direction at the Venice Biennale 2015 with his film "Factory Complex" and Lee Wan, the representative artist of the Korean pavilion at the Biennial of Venice 2017
The event will open its doors to the public on February 3 with the show presented by the "Tacit Group", the leading group of audiovisual performance in Korea. The closing will take place on March 17 and will be a stage where all the inhabitants of Gangwon, spectators and artists can participate.
This Biennial will have several special programs such as conferences, workshops for the public, etc.
