Deoksugung Outdoor Project : Light·Sound·Landscape is co-organized by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea and Deoksugung Palace Management Office in commemoration of the 120th anniversary of the declaration of the Korean Empire (1897). This exhibition takes aesthetical approach upon the historical space of the Deoksugung Palace, based on extensive research of the Korean Empire era. For this exhibition, nine artists who constructed individual paths in the field of visual art and music will present about ten works of art ranging from photography, drawing, object installation, video and sound within the seven palace buildings and outdoor space.
The history of the Deoksugung Palace as a royal residence began since King Sunjo (14th King of Joseon Dynasty) remained after the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, and it is also a symbolic place of strong will, where Emperor Gojong proclaimed the era of the Korean Empire, declaring Joseon as an independent nation to the world. Through this exhibition, visitors would explore the extraordinary senses, formed by the rendezvous of contemporary art and the living cultural heritage of Korea.
